Meet Dorcy Redleaf
My blanket will almost certainly be complete by the end of this week, and I don't want to photograph it again until it's done. So instead, a different kind of creativity!
Meet my RPG character, Dorcy Redleaf:

Artwork is by Dragos Stanculescu; I found it on Elfwood.com through a Google image search. :)
Now, technically this is a picture of a halfing (note her size relative to the wagon wheel behind her) , but when I created Dorcy's character I thought this was the perfect image for her.
Dorcy is around 1/16th elf through her father's line, a skilled hunter and herbalist, and can communicate on some level with most animals (a talent she suppressed for most of her life, and which only a very few people know about). She was isolated through her childhood, and has only recently begun to open up and allow herself to start making friends. Still, sometimes even the nicest people are too much for her and she has to escape back into the woods by herself for a while.
On the more technical side, she's a ranger with high Intelligence and Dexterity stats and several archery feats. Our game is D&D-based but mostly homebrew, with more of a focus on role-playing/storytelling than dice and battle mechanics, so I pretty much just made up the feats I wanted and we negotiated how they could be used in-game.
Quickshot: encounter ability; target 2 enemies in 1 round with ranged weapon
Steady Shot: encounter ability; add DEX modifier to attack roll with ranged weapon
Reflection: daily ability; reflect incoming damage back onto dealing attacker
Playing as a character has been a very new experience for me; up until this past year, all my tabletop gaming has been as the DM - so, I've been very good at switching back and forth between multiple characters that only had to be defined superficially. This is the first time I've spent so much concentration and energy on developing and maintaining one consistent personality, and it's difficult, but I'm still having a lot of fun.
Something that really helped me define Dorcy's character and mannerisms was creating a playlist for her. Now, I'll be honest - this was work. Interesting and satisfying, but still hard work. Not so for my husband, who sat down and cranked out his character's playlist in about an hour; mine took closer to a month before I had it finalized enough to burn a CD. Even now, I'm still tweaking and adding to it (I guess you could say Volume 2 is in the works?) but this project was by far the most useful to me in really getting to the core of who Dorcy is, what she wants, and what her past and present relationships are like - and also how to play her consistently. Volume 2 also starts to incorporate theme songs for significant side characters that have developed as we play, and how those characters relate to Dorcy from their own points of view.
Links are only included where I could find an official video.
